Why You Need To Buy The Shoes: Learning How To Have Fun Without Guilt
By: Aesha Adams-Roberts
When my husband bought me these fabulous shoes for Easter, he said, "You're always taking care of everyone else. Let me take care of you." Still, I was uneasy when I looked at the price tag. "Are you sure?" I kept asking him. "Yes. And get the handbag too if you'd like."
My instinct is to stay within budget, to maintain the status quo (in a good way), and to stabilize. As a result, splurging doesn't come naturally to me. I'd rather plan out my fun! But according to Joyce Meyer's book, Eat the Cookie . . .Buy the Shoes: Giving Yourself Permission to Lighten Up, we all need to indulge every now and then, without feeling guilty. In fact, Meyer suggests, God wants us to.
As women, it's easy to fall under the pressure to be perfect: you need the perfect body, with the perfect (spotless) house, the perfect kids, and the perfect career. Top it all off with the perfect attitude (you never get upset or frustrated, do you?!) Men aren't exempt from this pressure, either, they just tend to handle it differently than women.
Stress, frustration, worry, and exhaustion come when we give in to this pressure. We even project pressure onto our relationships–including our relationship with God, thinking He expects us to be perfect. The pressure takes on a voice which sounds a lot like this:
"Don't make any mistakes, or you'll miss out on the soul mate He has for you!"
"God forbid, you had a fight with your spouse and you yelled at the kids. You're not qualified to fulfill your dream."
"Never show weakness. Never let them see you sweat."
These are all false expectations and they become BURDENS of guilt we weren't meant to carry. Carry them long enough, and these burdens will suppress the unlived dream life on the inside of you, the life you were destined to live.
I remember when I set out to create my dream which included working from home and impacting the relationships of women and men around the world, one person at a time. I hit a few bumps in the road and became so frustrated. Then I heard God gently whisper in my heart, "Relax and enjoy the process." God loves your journey and He wants you to relax and have fun along the way! FUN! Remember, God is as holy as He is happy. He doesn't just tolerate fun; it makes Him happy when we do what we love!
So buy the shoes, eat the coconut flour donut holes (they're fat burners *wink*), play ball, take a nap, or whatever else you'd like to do to refresh yourself! You deserve it.
Question: What's one way YOU can have fun this weekend? What's one way you can bring refreshing to your spouse (or a friend, if you're not married) this weekend. Please share your answers below. I can't wait to read them
